Cb
and 1 ball are frozen ( touching one another ), they are
lined up approximately a ball above the corner pocket. There
are two ways to throw the 1 ball into the corner. My first
choice here would be to elevate the cue a little, use 2
tips of right hand english, aim the cb and 1 ball straight
on. You may hit the cb at 1:30, 3, or 4:30, I prefer 4:30
to avoid an illegal push, but all of these cb hits will
throw the 1 ball left and into the corner pocket...

Elevated
cue with 2 tips toward 3 o'clock as mentioned above. Using
a short jab stroke with this hit prevents the dreaded illegal
push. 860 Simonis cloth, preferred by professionals and seen
here on my table is non directional and has no nap, this makes
it a little harder to throw shots like this. You can simplify
this and throw this shot further left by aiming the cb right
one extra ball above the pocket as opposed to straight on... |
 |
Here
we go again, practice this shot with 2 and 3 tips of english,
cue elevated, tip hitting cb at 4:30 and practice hitting
this shot with the cb aimed straight on, then practice this
same shot aiming the cb further and further right of the
pocket, this will help you get a good feel for this and
other related shots...

Opposite
of the three demos above, the preferred cb cp ( contact
point ) is 7:30...
For the sake of clarity these two rails will be referred
to as, the left rail and right rail..
|
 |
Here
we have 3 balls frozen, the ob we are going to pocket here
is the 2 which is lined up so it will hit the rail in front
of the 2nd diamond. If the 1 ball & cb were alone, I
would hit the cb w/ 2 tips rc to throw the 1 a full ball
left from this distance. Again, for the sake of future clarity
I will be referring to the short end rail as the north rail,
the long side rail is now the east rail...
|
 |
REMEMBER;
Balls react exactly like gears and the spin reverses direction
w/ every additional ball. So if right hand english throws
1 ball left, it will throw the 2nd ball right, which will
not throw the 2 toward the pocket, therefore you must hit
this cb with maximum left english to successfully pocket
the 2 in the far corner pocket...
|
 |
Now
this will show you exactly what I mean.
Pull the cb back a diamond away from these two balls and
practice just how much left english you need to apply to
the cb to be able to hit this shot straight on and throw
the 2 ball into the corner. Hit the cb w/ 3 tips of left
hand english at 9 o'clock...
|
 |
Combination
and Throw;
The 3 & 4 ball are frozen, and therefore the weight
of the 3 will carry the 4 with it in the same direction
the 3 travels as much as possible. Hit the 3 on the left
edge and it will carry the 4 up away from the rail toward
the corner pocket...
|
 |
Hitting
the cb with 3 tips of right hand english at 4:30 accomplishes
two things;
1st/ The right english puts left english onthe 3 ball, which
in turn throws the 4 ball to the right, towards the pocket.
2nd/ Hitting the left edge of the 3 w/ the cb struck at 4:30
draws the cb a little to the rail and prevents the cb from
kissing the 4 ball on its way to the pocket.. |
 |
By
hitting the left edge ( 9 o'clock ) of the 3 ball with the
opposite right edge of the cb and applying 3 tips of right
hand english on the cb at 3 o'clock, it might be possible
to run the cb past the slower rolling 4 ball and avoid the
kiss, in this case the cb will then hit the bottom (west)
rail, then spin off the far (north) rail and up toward the
middle of the nearside (south) rail... |
 |
These
obs balls are frozen and lined up above the side pocket from
my point of view, so by hitting the 1 ball on the left side
with right english I again accomplish two things, the weight
of the 1 ball carries the 2 ball with it a little, and the
right english puts left spin on the 1 ball causing the 2 ball
to throw to the right... |
 |
The
3rd ball in all multiple ball combinations will dictate
whether or not the combination is dead (can't be missed).
Here we have the 2 & 3 ball lined up well below the
pocket, but notice the 1 ball against the 2 ball, by hitting
the 1 ball straight on here it pushes the 2 up which carries
the 3 ball with it. Hit the cb with the opposite english
of the direction of the throw when throwing an odd number
of balls, and with english in the same direction of the
throw when throwing an even number of balls... Learning
anything ? Jimmy...
